My bit to help the Earth       Article Momme, USA Adult

I’m not sure if the event is open for kids only but I couldn’t resist sending in my entry. My kids are still too young to participate but I’ll look forward to their views in a few years. My bit is as follows:

1.        My kids paint using a paper roll on a painting aisle. The rule followed is

·         All paper cutting for fun is done using this painted paper.

·         Scribbling and drawing is done on the back side. (I cut smaller squares/rectangles and keep in their project box.)

·         Only pasting projects where something particular is being made, construction paper is used.

·         Sometimes this painted paper is used for wrapping birthday gifts as well.

2.       I buy sketching books of recycled paper – they’re cheaper too!

3.       Nearly half the toy bins are cardboard boxes covered with painted paper or artwork made at school/in the house.

4.       I use the dryer only in an emergency. On a regular basis, I spread the clothes on a clothes rack which makes it easier to iron them as well.

5.       “Switch off the light when you’re not in the room”. That’s the rule that my parents set when I was a kid and remains a rule in our house even now.

6.       While TV time is regulated for the children – we try that the kids watch TV at the same time. When TV is off, they play together or do their own stuff.

7.       When it starts getting cold in the winters, we all wear jumpers and socks in the house. While we still do turn on the heating, we don’t need to heat the house that much as we would have without the warm clothes.

8.       While traveling, we carry water from the house rather than buy bottled water – it saves plastic as well as money!

9.       If not too dirty, I save the disposable table covers used on birthdays/picnics and use them for the kids painting/project desks to keep the place clean.

10.    I wash the glass bottles and reuse them for storing spices, pulses etc.

And I keep telling my little ones, lets not waste paper (tissues included). If we keep doing that, we’ll need to cut more trees and then there won’t be any trees left!
