The Happy Kingdom and the Paper spell     Story Yamini, USA Adult

Once upon a time there was a Happy kingdom. It was full of big trees, green grass, flowers and animals. There was even a clear stream of water where children loved to splash and the animals and birds came to drink water. The children would play with the horses, sing with the birds, chase the rabbits and swing on the branches of trees. When they were tired, they would rest in the shade of the trees. Their parents would smile to see the children have so much fun. Even fairies flying high in the sky could hear the children laugh.

When inside the house, the children would read books, paint, do cutting and pasting projects, cut patterns on paper, scribble and draw. Their parents had told them “children, please don’t waste paper. We’ll need to cut trees if we use more paper”. So the children of Happy Kingdom always used both sides of the paper and cut only used paper. They even shared books and kept them carefully.

One day the Naughty fairy did a trick. She cast a Paper spell on the children. The children forgot what their parents had said and started using paper carelessly. For everything they did, they would use a new sheet of paper. And since all the children did the same, soon there was no paper left in the shops. A few trees were cut to make more paper for the children. Every time the shops had no paper left, more trees were cut.

Slowly and slowly, there were very few trees left. The grass also started dying. The animals didn’t have enough place to stay. So very often they fought amongst themselves – “This tree is mine” “No! This one is mine”. Some of them died while others went away to another kingdom. The birds didn’t have branches to make their nest so they too flew away. Without the shade of the trees, the flowers too died. As time passed, the Happy kingdom didn’t have any trees, grass or flowers left. Now the land looked brown as there was only mud on it and no plants. When the wind blew, it would carry the mud along making the houses dusty. There was dust on the chairs, in the kitchen and on the bed. There was dust everywhere! Even the clear stream of water became brown with mud. Now the children didn’t splash in it as they didn’t want to get dirty. While in the past on windy days the children had kite flying competitions, but now even that stopped. The mud carried by the wind hurt their eyes. Now, there were no trees to play around, no animals to chase or birds to sing with. The children became sad. The parents too became sad when they saw that the children were unhappy.

The King decided to get help. He sent his special pigeon with a message for the Green Fairy. When the Green fairy read the letter she looked into her magic box. She saw the trick that Naughty fairy had done. She quickly sat on her flying horse and reached high up over the magic kingdom. Using her magic wand and magic words, she made some magic rain. When the magic rain touched the children, the naughty fairy’s spell was broken.

The children realized their mistake. Wasting paper had left them without trees and animals. Even the clean water and houses had become dirty. “How we wish, the Happy Kingdom was just as it was earlier” the children sighed.

There was lightening in the sky and a sudden shower of magic rain. In a blink of the eye, their wish came true. The kingdom was full of big trees, green grass, flowers and animals! The stream of water was clean once again. “Never again will we let our animal friends and trees go away” shouted the children as they raced towards the trees, the stream and the animals. Fairies flying high in the sky could again hear the laughter of children coming from the Happy Kingdom. Everyone lived happily ever after.
