Raksha Bandhan -

An indian festival celebrating the bond of love between brothers and sisters

Make Rakhis

Fancy craft thread or narrow ribbons,attractive  stickers

  1. Cut the strings/ribbon so that it can be conveniently tied on the wrist.

  2. Fix the sticker towards the centre of the ribbon.

Diwali -

An important Indian  festival that marks the start of the Hindu new year

Presentation/Talk (if staying in a locale not familiar with the festival).

                   

 

 

Make Diya's

Play-dough / magic mold, construction paper, glitter glue, glue, scissors

  1. Roll the clay into a ball. Press the thumb inside and flatten it to make a bowl.

  2. Cut the construction paper into flames and glue together to make it sturdy. You can decorate it with glitter glue to make it shine.

  3. Place the flame in the centre of the Diya to resemble a real flame. (picture of Diya above)

 

Diwali poster

Chart paper, sketchpens, glitter and glue

  1. Write Happy Diwali in big beautiful letters.

  2. Have the kids colour the alphabets.

  3. Make streaks of glue on the albhabets. Pour glitter. Shake it and you have a nice sparkly poster ready!

 

Light the Diya blindfolded game

Chart paper, yellow construction paper flames, salu-tape behind the flame cut-outs, markers, blindfold

  1. Draw a huge diya on the chart paper.

  2. Make yellow flames and cut them out.

  3. Blindfold the children one by one and let them stick the flames on the Diya.

  4. The person with the flame closest to the centre of the Diya is the winner.

 

Light the candles

Paper with print-out of different pictures associated with festivals, markers

  1. Give the children one sheet of paper each.

  2. Let them draw a flame on the candles dispersed amongst the pictures.

Rangoli colouring

Rangoli print-outs from the net, crayons

  1. Let the children colour the rangoli.
